Nebraska House is a coastal retreat on North Bruny Island, designed for multiple families to holiday together. It offers a quiet and deliberate response to an exposed and beautiful shoreline setting. The project explores how architecture can offer shelter and connection without interrupting the natural character of the landscape.
Materials were selected for resilience and simplicity, with bushfire-resistant timber cladding designed to weather naturally in the salty, windswept conditions. Internally, spaces are arranged to capture expansive views of the water and surrounding landscape, while providing shelter from prevailing winds. Open yet protected, the plan supports a fluid relationship between inside and outside, encouraging a slower, more conscious way of living.
The interior layout is designed for flexibility and communal living, with spaces that can adapt to different needs and activities. Built-in furniture and thoughtful detailing enhance functionality while maintaining a sense of calm and simplicity.
